Finding artists

In Media we looked at how different artists are chosen by labels and how they make money off of those artists. There are ways in which they find the artists. They can be chosen the organic way. The organic way is looking at the music that is used by the artists and seeing how good the music is, seeing if they have potential and if they will develop their music into something that will be really popular. This is a long term way if signing artists. Types of organic artists are people such as ed Sheeran. The labels can make money off the artists by different ways. Music sales can be a way by agreeing to a certain percentage of sales off of the service. Things such as streaming on Spotify, SoundCloud and YouTube views can make a lot of money. Physical copies such as cds are also a way of making money although physical copies of music are not that popular anymore. Other ways can be music events the artist is in such as doing giggs and festivals. Merchandise is also good for making money off the artist. They find these artists off of streaming websites such as SoundCloud, YouTube and spotify. The other side is synthetic. This involves getting an artist or band off of their looks to get them popular so that the label can get money. Groups like one direction and spice galls fall into this category. This is a short term way of making money.

I looked at the my songs and I had to put down the age of the artist, if it is a solo or not, whether it can be cast from using hurtwood students.

  1. Hi Gite

Good summary of organic and synthetic artists here and how they reflect different investment strategies for record labels. It would help to include some images that show some of the examples you mention, which demonstrate that synthetic is more about a gimmick/image rather than music/artistry.

I think you have written off some of your song choices unnecessarily. The second one is clearly British - the link says UK! The third one also does not have an obviously American accent IMO. Again here it would help to show photos of those original artists and to reflect on its possible to cast those roles from the students at school.

Finally please remember to connect your research/findings to your own production decisions - are you going to look for a real singer/songwriter or band at school or are you going to find a track and then match it with a face, and then style/shape the image more aggressively? What are the pros and cons of these two approaches?
